Bergrivier Municipality migrated to a new prepaid electricity service provider called Ontec, which took effect on 1 August 2025. With the new prepaid electricity system in place, customers are encouraged to register a profile on Ontec’s website (bergrivier.ontec.co.za), which will be the primary platform for prepaid electricity purchases.
Amongst the benefits of the website is that customers can track their electricity consumption and view previous tokens.

How to register on Ontec's website:

Step 1: Registration
- Visit bergrivier.ontec.co.za
- Click on Customer Registration and then proceed to complete all the fields in full;
- Tick the “I agree” box and then click on “Register”;
- Complete the registration and activate your account via the confirmation email to the e-mail address that you provided;

Step 2 : Login
- Now, visit the bergrivier.ontec.co.za website and then login / sign-in with your username and password

Step 3: Click on Meter Registration
- Now, enter your meter number
- The system will load the debtor details linked to that meter.

Step 4: Complete Consumer Details
- Fill in your address details on the screen, including street name and house number.

Step 5: Purchase a Prepaid Resource
- Go to the Prepaid section
- Use the dropdown menu and select “Buy Resource”
- Enter your unique meter number
- Use the dropdown menu called “payment method” and select Deposit / EFT
- You will now receive a “Deposit Reference” code and the details of the three bank account numbers of Ontec Systems Pty Ltd at their preferred banks namely: Nedbank, Standard Bank and FNB)
- Proceed to your private banking app and create a beneficiary for Ontec using one of the above Ontec accounts (available at bergrivier.ontec.co.za)
- Finally, remember to use the “Deposit Reference” code when making the payment via your banks online platform (please note that FNB, Capitec, Standard (in testing) Bank and Nedbank are already available for prepaid electricity purchases. With Absa Bank, you will have to make use of "Payshap" or an immediate bank transfer to get your token instantly. *Normal banking fees will apply.* If you choose not to pay the fee, your electricity token could take up to 48 hours to be received)

Step 6: Receive Your Token
- Once the payment is successful, your token will be sent via SMS or Email or both (depending on your selection choice).
_Please note: Your first prepaid electricity purchase may take a few minutes due to verification processes._

All customers who make use of their banking app to purchase prepaid electricity may continue to do so via the “Buy Electricity” tab (except for Absa Bank)

Stap-vir-Stap Gids vir Aanlyn Aankope vir Ontec se Voorafbetaalde Elektrisiteitstelsel

Stap-vir-stap Bergrivier Munisipaliteit het op 1 Augustus 2025 oorgeskakel na ’n nuwe verskaffer van voorafbetaalde elektrisiteit genaamd Ontec. Met die nuwe voorafbetaalde elektrisiteitstelsel in werking, word kliënte aangemoedig om ’n profiel te skep op Ontec se webtuiste (bergrivier.ontec.co.za), wat die primêre platform sal wees om voorafbetaalde elektrisiteit aan te koop.
Een van die voordele van Ontec se webtuiste is dat kliënte hul elektrisiteitsverbruik kan bestuur en vorige tokens kan besigtig.
Hoe om te registreer op Ontec se webtuiste:

Stap 1: Registrasie
- Besoek bergrivier.ontec.co.za
- Klik op “Customer Registration” (Kliëntregistrasie) en voltooi al die velde;
- Klik op die "I agree"-blokkie en dan op "Register";
- Voltooi die registrasie proses en aktiveer u rekening via die bevestigings-e-pos wat na die e-posadres wat u verskaf het gestuur sal word.

Stap 2: Teken in
- Gaan weer na bergrivier.ontec.co.za en teken in met u gebruikersnaam (username) en wagwoord (password).

Stap 3: Klik op “Meter Registration”
- Sit u meternommer in;
- Die stelsel sal die debiteure-besonderhede laai wat aan daardie meter gekoppel is.

Stap 4: Voltooi Verbruikersbesonderhede
- Vul u adresbesonderhede in, insluitend straatnaam en huisnommer.

Stap 5: Koop ’n Voorafbetaalde Hulpbron (Prepaid Resource)
- Gaan na die Prepaid afdeling;
- Gebruik die aftreklys en kies “Buy Resource”;
- Sit u unieke meternommer in;
- Gebruik die aftreklys vir “payment method” en kies Deposit / EFT;
- U sal nou ’n "Deposit Reference" kode ontvang asook die besonderhede van vier beskikbare bankrekeningnommers van Ontec Systems Pty Ltd by hul voorkeurbanke, naamlik: Nedbank, Standard Bank (toetsfase), Capitec en FNB;
- Nou moet u u bank app oopmaak en 'n begunstigde vir Ontec skep deur een van die bogenoemde rekeninge te gebruik (beskikbaar op bergrivier.ontec.co.za);
- Onthou om die “Deposit Reference” kode te gebruik wanneer u die betaling op u bank se aanlyn platform maak. (Neem kennis: FNB, Capitec, Nedbank en Standard Bank is reeds beskikbaar vir voorafbetaalde elektrisiteitsaankope. Met Absa Bank sal u van "Payshap" of 'n onmiddellike bankoorplasing / direkte betaling gebruik moet maak om u elektrisiteitsbewysstrokie (token) dadelik te ontvang. Normale bankfooie sal van toepassing wees. Indien u verkies om nie die fooi te betaal nie, kan dit tot 48 uur neem om u Elektrisiteitsbewysstrokie (token) te ontvang).

Stap 6: Ontvang u Elektrisiteitsbewysstrokie
- Sodra die betaling suksesvol is, sal u elektrisiteitsbewysstrokie / token per SMS of e-pos of albei aan u gestuur word (afhangend van u keuse).

Let wel: U eerste voorafbetaalde aankoop mag ’n paar minute neem weens ’n verifikasieproses.

Alle kliënte wat hul bank-app gebruik om voorafbetaalde elektrisiteit te koop, kan voortgaan om dit te doen via die “Buy Electricity”-afdeling (Behalwe vir Absa Bank).
